God did not just deal with the fruits of our sin but the root of them as well. It was the sin nature in us that needed changing if we were going to walk in holiness as God would have us. God replaced our old nature with His own. First John tells us that His seed now abides in us.

In other words, although we were born with a sinful nature we inherited from Adam, we now have a new nature that has God's own "seed" or DNA in it. We are now able to walk free of sin because the basic nature of who we are has changed.

The roots of an orange tree will cause the tree to grow and eventually produce oranges. It cannot produce anything else because it has the genetics of an orange tree in its very fabric.

Likewise, we produce sin because we are born with a sinful nature. Once we are born again with the nature of God, we can then produce new "fruits of righteousness."

God did not just forgive the sinful fruit we have produced. He changed the very root of our lives so that we now have a new nature which will produce new fruit. Romans 6:6 states it this way, "Knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin."

As a born-again believer, you are no longer living from a body of sin; rather, you have become a new person created in the image of God. Ephesians 4:24 tells us, "And put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth."
